Plans have been approved for a major regeneration project in Aldershot town centre.
Rushmoor Borough Council has approved plans by Rushmoor Development Partnership (RDP), a joint venture between the council and Hill Investment Partnerships, to replace a mostly-derelict 0.53-hectare site in Union Street with:
- 100 one and two bedroom flats, each with one podium parking space
- 128 units of student accommodation
- 2,237 sq m of flexible retail space
There will be an enclosed garden area for residents and two areas of public realm to be known as Union Yard and Makers’ Yard, with cafes and independent businesses surrounding the courtyards.
The student accommodation has no parking.
All the retail units will allow A1 – A5 retail, restaurant and financial uses and B1 (business) and D1 (non-residential institutions).
The student accommodation plans have been drawn up in conjunction with the University for the Creative Arts.
Cllr Marina Munro told the meeting: “This application has been publicly consulted on with approximately 1,200 members of the public attending these events and the approval rate was exceptionally high.
“The Aldershot Civic Society support the link with the University of the Creative Arts and the university, equally, has recognised this development as superb.”
Cllr Martin Tennant, chair of the Rushmoor Development Partnership, said: “This scheme will be a catalyst for further investment, enhancing links to the creative sector, creating jobs and training and bringing much needed high-quality homes into the town centre.”
Architect for the scheme is JTP which is also working on redevelopment of The Galleries shopping centre.
Demolition is already under way and completion of the development is planned for Spring 2024.
