Public consultation is under way over the regeneration of Colchester’s St Botolph’s Quarter.
Engagement with local businesses and community groups began in November and now Team Colchester – a partnership between Colchester city and Essex county councils – is going public on the project which is backed by £7 million from the Government.
The proposals envision redevelopment of Britannia Car Park and the surrounding area and will see the transformation of the area around the former bus depot.
Key features of the redevelopment include:
- A new public square behind Colchester Town Station.
- A new entrance and exit ramp from Colchester Town Station
- A new walking route connecting the train station to the Priory,
- Improved ground at St Botolph’s Priory
The project is in addition to the £12 million St Botolph’s Circus development set to begin in 2026.
Cllr Kevin Bentley, leader of Essex County Council, said: “Team Colchester is committed to ensuring that this transformation reflects the aspirations and needs of our community. This project is not only about improving our city’s infrastructure, but also enhancing the visitor experience, supporting local businesses, and celebrating our heritage. We want to hear from everyone – residents, businesses, and visitors – so we can make the biggest changes to our city centre in over 100 years.”
The current masterplan was shaped by the views of more than 2,000 people and the current consultation will lead to a planning application in Spring.
Chris Holland, senior development manager at LCR, the placemaking specialist consultancy, leading project for the council, said: “We are committed to ensuring that this redevelopment reflects the aspirations of the community while providing sustainable growth for the city.
“By engaging with local residents, businesses, and stakeholders, we are building a project that supports Colchester’s future while preserving its unique character. We invite everyone to participate in the upcoming consultation and share their thoughts on the proposed designs.”
Two in-person events are planned this week at St Botolph’s Church on:
- Tuesday, January 28, 2.30pm – 5.30pm
- Wednesday, January 29, 4.30pm – 8pm
Cllr David King, leader of Colchester City Council, said: “We are confident this development will provide long-term benefits to the city. We are excited to have a unique opportunity to deliver something truly special for Colchester, and for those that work, live, and visit our city. We welcome the views of residents, every step of the way, ahead on this and wider regeneration.”
