The Royal Borough of Kingston has secured an agreement to deliver an additional 104 new council homes in the first phase of the Cambridge Road Estate regeneration.

This increases the number of new council homes available for rent in the initial phase of this ambitious neighbourhood redevelopment to 254.

Securing this increase in council homes is part of Kingston’s ongoing commitment to helping tackle the national housing shortage and its subsequent impact on homelessness. The council has successfully obtained grant funding from the Greater London Authority (GLA) to deliver this additional social housing.

It is a challenging time for residents and councils alike. In the face of an uncertain economic climate, a cost of living crisis and pre-existing stretched housing resources, this milestone represents a significant step to help address several issues, emphasising the council’s sustained effort towards meeting the community’s needs.

The delivery of these 254 new council homes demonstrates the Royal Borough of Kingston’s longstanding commitment to reducing the number of people and families on the housing waiting list and improving opportunities for local people in temporary accommodation. Once all five phases of the scheme are complete, the Cambridge Road Estate regeneration will provide a total of 871 new council homes, 218 more than on the original estate.

Cllr Emily Davey, portfolio holder for housing, said:

“This is a great win for our borough. We have approximately 3,700 households on the housing register awaiting a permanent suitable home, with close to 1,000 living in temporary accommodation.

“Vulnerable residents wait years for a council home in Kingston. After over 30 years of no action, Kingston is building again. We are providing the warm safe homes local people need.”
