Consultation has begun over the potential development of 40,500 sq m of science and innovation space along with 100 homes in Welwyn.
Welwyn Hatfield Council has launched engagement over a key planning document to develop a site known as Marshmoor, close to Welham Green railway station between the A1000 and the railway line.
The landowner and the council want to see Marshmoor developed for science and innovation employment.
A supplementary planning document (SPD) adding detail to policies set out in the Local Plan has been prepared to guide future development. The council is now seeking the views of on the SPD, in a consultation that will run until Friday March 21.
The SPD’s five-point vision for the site includes a proposal to make it ‘a new, nationally recognised innovation and technology campus’, ‘an exemplar of high quality design and sustainability’, and ‘a well-integrated and sensitive neighbour’.
It also identifies opportunities for the site such as improved walking and cycling links, as well as constraints such as the presence of heritage assets and possible noise from the nearby road and railway line.
The SPD considers how the site might be accessed, including how the development might lead to improved links to Welham Green railway station and village centre. It also suggests one way that the site could be developed, including likely phasing.
Cllr Rose Grewal, executive member for planning, for Welwyn Hatfield Council, said: “Building high-quality homes and enabling an economy that works for everyone are key ambitions for the council. This SPD sets out how we could create a major site for employment and associated housing in the borough that would help us to achieve these goals.
“I would like to encourage people to share their views on this important document so that we can ensure it is as detailed and comprehensive as possible.”
There will be a drop-in event at the Welham Green Community Centre on Tuesday, February 25 (3pm – 7pm).
