Councillors have approved plans for a mixed-use redevelopment that will bring hundreds of new homes to Stevenage.

Stevenage Borough Council’s planning and development committee followed the officers’ recommendation to approve the redevelopment of The Oval, a 3.97-hectare 1960s shopping and residential area, at its July 17 meeting,

The hybrid application, put forward by the council itself, includes outline consent for 250 homes with 1,200 sq m of mixed commercial (Class E), parking and public realm improvements including a new market square with up to 2,650 sq m of commercial space.

It also includes full permission for 91 homes with communal facilities for independent living and a community building which will include a place of worship at nearby Hobbs Court.

Regeneration of The Oval is a longstanding ambition of the council. Existing buildings could not be brought up to modern standards.

The scheme is to be phased over a number of years.
