The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has embarked on an ambitious journey to redefine Twickenham Stadium, now known as Allianz Stadium, as a premier global venue for sports and entertainment.

Central to this transformation are Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB UK) and Populous, appointed as Project Manager and Architect & Lead Designer, respectively, for the Stadium Masterplan Project, RIBA Stage 2.

Rider Levett Bucknall, renowned for its expertise in project management, is tasked with steering the project through its critical planning phase. Their role is pivotal in ensuring that the RFU’s vision for a world-class venue is realized efficiently and effectively. Populous, a global leader in sports architecture, brings its innovative design prowess to the table, aiming to enhance the stadium’s functionality and aesthetic appeal.

The Stadium Masterplan Project is not just about physical transformation; it is a strategic initiative to secure the financial future of the RFU. Allianz Stadium is a vital asset, generating approximately 85 per cent of the RFU’s revenue. However, the stadium faces significant challenges, including restrictions on hosting non-rugby events. Currently, the venue is limited to three non-rugby events annually, each with a maximum capacity of 55,000. This limitation hinders the RFU’s ability to attract major events and maximize revenue.

To address these challenges, the RFU has set ambitious goals. They aim to increase the number of non-sporting events to nine in 2026, twelve in 2027, and fifteen in 2028. Achieving these targets is crucial for generating the revenue needed to fund the estimated £650 million development work on the stadium. Failure to secure increased event licenses could force the RFU to consider relocating to other cities, such as Birmingham or Milton Keynes.

Community engagement is another critical aspect of the project. The RFU is working closely with the Richmond Borough Council to address local concerns regarding the increase in events. They have proposed additional conditions on their license to mitigate potential disruptions. Furthermore, the RFU has embraced modern trends by making Allianz Stadium a cashless venue and restricting external food and drink, enhancing the visitor experience.

The renaming of Twickenham Stadium to Allianz Stadium in 2024, following a 10-year naming rights deal with Allianz, marks a new era for the venue. This partnership underscores the RFU’s commitment to innovation and financial sustainability.
