A bid to transform the former Colchester Garrison site into new homes has moved a step closer after the land was put up for sale.

Property agent Savills is currently inviting offers for the ex-MOD site in Butt Road.

The land comprises nine buildings but planning permission has already been granted for the conversion them to provide 70 homes and two commercial units.

The new scheme could potentially include a mix of one and two-bedroom apartments, two and three-bedroom bungalows and three and four-bedroom houses.

Rebecca Kirwan, associate director in the development team at Savills in Essex, said the site was in a key position and they were expecting strong interest.

“This is an important site in a prime location, close to the city centre and with good access to the railway stations and A12,” she said.

“The potential sale, and subsequent redevelopment, represents an exciting opportunity to deliver sustainable growth in the shape of high-quality residential use, significantly contributing to the supply of much-needed new homes in the local area.

“Appetite for development land in the East of England has proved resilient and there has been an uptick in both national and regional housebuilders seeking opportunities across a range of sites.

“We are expecting strong interest and preference will be given to parties who can clearly demonstrate they have undertaken a full analysis of the site and understood all of the obligations to be placed upon them.”

Savills is inviting offers until 12pm on September 27.
