Wandsworth Council have launched a public consultation on proposed changes which will require developers to deliver 50 per cent affordable housing on all new sites.
As part of the Local Plan review, Wandsworth are seeking to update some of the policies used to decide local planning applications to ensure new developments deliver more genuinely affordable housing.
Under the proposals half of new homes built in the Borough will be affordable housing, with the majority (at least 70 per cent) being social or council rent. For the first time, developments of nine homes or fewer will also contribute to affordable housing.
Simon Hogg, leader of the Council, said:
“This Council will continue to prioritise affordable homes for local residents to meet the needs of the borough. We are asking residents to share their views on these proposed changes.”
Aydin Dikerdem, cabinet member for housing, said:
“We are already building 1,000 new council homes on our own land through our Homes for Wandsworth programme but there is still an acute shortage of genuinely affordable homes in our community. We cannot achieve everything we want to on our own.
“That is why the review of our Local Plan looks to developers to deliver more secure and affordable homes for local people, ensuring that property developers contribute towards our vision of a fairer borough for all.”
The consultation documents, and further guidance including a non-technical Easy Read summary, are all available online at www.wandsworth.gov.uk/LocalPlanReview or in hard copy at Wandsworth Town Hall or local libraries during regular opening hours.
Details of how to respond to the consultation are available at the same locations.
All responses must be received by Monday 24th February 2025.
Following this consultation, a Government-appointed Inspector will examine the proposals and public responses will be taken into consideration.
