Progress has been made towards making the West London Orbital (WLO) line a strong possibility. The proposed line from Hendon (North London) will link to Hounslow (West London) utilising the Dudding Hill line (Freight) and existing capacity. The approval of Old Oak Common Station (Crossrail, HS2) and Brent Cross West (Thameslink) in recent weeks will create significant stepping stones towards the desired outcome. The business case developed in June 2019 has been costed at £264m and would be delivered by the mid-twenties if approved.
The new link would provide 8,000 new homes and 23,000 jobs (TFL). It would connect many key elements of the London economy, the Golden Mile with Brent Cross Shopping centre, the new Brentford FC Stadium at Lionel Road and Kew Gardens would be easily reached from West Hampstead and Wembley. Connectivity across the Elizabeth Line, Thameslink and HS2 would be a boon to local economies and take the pressure off the existing public transport network.
TFL and the West London Alliance are behind the scheme.
