An application has been submitted to Greater Cambridge Shared Planning Authority for the demolition of the former Felix Hotel, a former four-star boutique hotel with a restaurant, just off Huntingdon Road, Cambridge.
The 52-bedroom hotel and a popular events venue was on the market for £8.5 million in 2018, with planning permission for an extension, though since the owners, Cassel Hotels, have taken it off the market and have now submitted a planning application for its demolition and replacement with a new care home.
The care home proposal is for an 80 bed, all with en-suites care home on the 1.39-hectare site, seeing a complete demolition of the Victorian Villa which currently stands on the site, as well as fully re-landscaping the gardens, and the provision of car and bike parking.
The new building will provide 24-hour residential care for residents, with 40 of the 80 rooms designated for specialist dementia care.
Features of the home include a communal ‘Great Room’, orangery, and library, as well as communal dining and eating areas. The services offered will be a wellbeing centre, spa, and a hair and beauty salon.
The application seems to be controversial with many locals objecting to the plans, over heritage, environmental and lack of need in the area, whilst others support the plans due to the necessity with an ageing population, and the specialist care they will be providing, in particular dementia.
A decision has not yet been made on the application and it is open to comments from the public.
