Plans for 50 homes at Sonning Golf Club go before councillors on Wednesday (August 9) with a recommendation for approval – despite a detailed objection from a former Prime Minister.
The club’s plans for its Duffield Road site also include reconfiguring its car park, moving the 18th green and adding a practice putting green, driving nets, short game chipping area and alterations to the clubhouse to incorporate a golf simulator.
The 50 homes, ranging from one to five-bedroom properties, will be built on a five-hectare parcel of land, accessed from Duffield Road.
The scheme to go before Wokingham Borough Council’s planning committee, will include a 40 per cent proportion of affordable homes.
More than 100 objections have been lodged against the proposal including from Sonning parish and Woodley town councils and former Prime Minister and Maidenhead MP Theresa May who lives nearby.
Mrs May wrote to the council in December 2022 on House of Commons notepaper to object and submitted another objection through the planning process in May 2023 after the plans were revised from 54 homes to 50.
She argued in her first objection that such a large development could permanently change the village of Sonning, increasing its population by 17 per cent, putting pressure on local services, increasing traffic and risking flooding.
And in her comment through the council’s planning portal in May she set out detailed objections on environmental grounds and argued the scheme would need further ecological assessment work.
