Images of a new learning campus for Thetford to tackle post-16 training opportunities were revealed by Breckland Council and West Suffolk College at the end of last year.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government found some parts of Thetford to be ‘among the 20% most deprived in England for education, skills and training’. Previously, teenagers had travelled to Bury St Edmunds or Norwich.

West Suffolk College, which is run by the Eastern Education Group, was listed among nine other specialist construction colleges to receive part of a £100 million investment to train more roofers, electricians, carpenters and bricklayers.

Nikos Savvas, chief executive of the Eastern Education Group, said: “This new hub will give us the ability to deliver the skills employers need and create clearer pathways into the careers driving our region’s growth.

“By bringing hands-on vocational training right into Thetford, we can build a stronger workforce, boost employment and help lift the local economy.”

It is understood that the council will review the best method of securing funding to deliver the scheme once planning work and budgeting analysis has been completed.
