Hammersmith and Fulham Planning Committee approved plans for Sacred Heart High School, 212 Hammersmith Road, to convert the 1930s Stuart Building from a gymnasium into a 225-seat school theatre and performing arts centre.

The scheme includes a new eastern front extension with a mezzanine foyer projecting into the courtyard, a rear infill extension to the west, and associated internal, external and landscaping works.

Officers recommended both planning permission and listed building consent for approval, subject to conditions and a legal agreement. They concluded that the proposals are of high-quality design and respond well to the school campus and surrounding area.

Although the project would involve some demolition and infilling of the courtyard, causing less than substantial harm to the Grade II* listed Sacred Heart School, this harm was judged to be low and outweighed by the benefits of improved educational and cultural facilities.

The scheme was also found not to harm nearby heritage assets, including the Brook Green conservation area and the locally listed buildings fronting Bute Gardens. Existing mature lime and London plane trees are to be retained, and the eastern courtyard access from Bute Gardens will remain.

Overall, the development was considered to preserve the character and significance of the heritage setting while enhancing active use on the site.
