Gloucester County Council will reach a verdict at their next cabinet meeting regarding approval of a capital contribution of £1 million, towards a replacement highway structure at Walk Bridge.

The project is more broadly known as the Cotswold Canal Trust Stroudwater Canal Restoration (Walk Bridge Scheme) and is led by Stroud District Council alongside the Cotswold Canal Trust.

The proposal is being highlighted as a key decision, due to the potential expenditure reaching over £500,000 and its impact on two electoral divisions.

Specifically, the initial aim of the proposal is to replace the current canal crossing located at Walk Bridge, near Whitminster, as the current structure prevents boat travel through the canal, the new structure is also expected to maintain existing travel routes.

Recommendations

Cllr Joe Harris, cabinet member for highways, recommends to delegate authority to the executive director of economy, environment & infrastructure, in consultation with himself in order to achieve:

  • Approval of a £1m capital contribution from Gloucester County Council, to be used for design and construction costs of the replacement highway structure at Walk Bridge.
  • Determination of the nature and extent of GCC’s role in project delivery, in order to avoid exceeding the £1m contribution.

Comments

Jason Humm, director of transport and highways at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “Replacing Walk Bridge is a crucial piece of the jigsaw in restoring and connecting the Stroudwater Canal. This investment helps unlock major external funding while supporting active travel, heritage, nature recovery and local regeneration.

“It’s an excellent example of the county council playing its part in a partnership project that delivers long-term benefits for communities across Gloucestershire.”

Future of the proposal

Subject to approval, construction would expected to take place over the next two to three years, with the ambition of reconnecting the canal in time for its 250th anniversary in 2029.
