A full planning application for Land at Audley End, Melford Road in Lawshall, seeking the change of land use from Grade 3 agricultural to Sui Generis (more specifically Bird of Prey displays, Experiences, and Small Reptile Exhibits), will be heard at tomorrows Babergh planning committee.
The application is being brought forward by Laverham Falconry, with Optimum Architecture acting as agent, with the Falconry relocating operations to the site if successful, moving from their current site in Monks Eleigh.
The proposal seeks construction of a small number of buildings, that will become a reception, an aquarium, a hospital, and a quarantine area.
Alongside this there would also be infrastructure for storage, training, and animal well-being, with animal enclosures and aviaries included, and a new access from Melford Road, which would comprise parking for 24 vehicles, two disabled spaces, cycle storage, and powered two-wheeler parking.
Recommendation
There have been 34 objections to the proposal, including from Lawshall Parish Council, who take issue with the lack of quantified information on the level of visitor traffic, with many of the other objections focusing on ecology, traffic, access, and landscape issues.
There have also been 13 comments in support of the proposal, including from the economic development and tourism team at Mid Suffolk and Babergh District Councils, who feel the development would positively contribute to Babergh and Suffolks visitor economy, and enhance tourism, educational, and conservation offer
Overall, the recommendation is to grant permission, as the planning officer considers the proposals benefits to outweigh the local residents and the Parish Councils complaints.
The recommendation is subject to a number of conditions, including a limit of visitors at any one time.
