Regeneration work is advancing on the Alton estate in Roehampton, where a long-empty block is being cleared to make room for new homes and community spaces.
Demolition of the derelict residential block is well underway, and the former garages, offices and youth club have already been removed.
The project marks the first major step in delivering the improvements residents have asked for, with plans for new housing, community facilities and better public spaces. The council is reviewing development proposals to ensure they meet local needs, while also exploring ways to attract business investment that could bring additional services to the area.
Residents will have the opportunity to share their views before final designs are agreed, and work is also underway to appoint the right contractor for the scheme. Councillor Matthew Corner said the investment responds directly to what residents want, including improved facilities and stronger public spaces, and described the Block A progress as an important milestone.
Alongside the redevelopment, the council is funding wider estate improvements such as better lighting and new play spaces. Officials say they will keep residents informed and involved throughout the process, aiming to create a safer, more welcoming neighbourhood shaped by local priorities.
