Richmond Town Centre belongs to the people who live, work, and spend time here; a new online engagement hub makes it easier to help shape its future.
The hub brings together information on town centre plans and projects in one place, so people can see what’s happening, have their say, and follow progress as we work to deliver our long-term vision.
Councillor Katie Mansfield, lead member for Richmond Town Centre, said: “Richmond is already a fantastic place, and we want to keep it that way. But we can’t stand still.
“Like high streets around the country, our town centre faces significant challenges and changing expectations. We need to protect what people love about our town centre while making sensible, thoughtful improvements that ensure it continues to thrive for residents, visitors and businesses alike. That means planning for the future but also keeping an eye on the small things that make a big difference to people’s experiences of Richmond.
“Local people know Richmond better than anyone. They’ve already helped shape our vision and priorities, and we want that conversation to continue. This new hub makes it easier to see what we’re planning, understand how things are progressing and tell us what you think.
“This is about listening, being open about what’s happening and making sure local voices remain at the heart of shaping Richmond’s future.”
Residents, businesses and community groups have told us they are proud of Richmond’s riverside setting, its green spaces and its unique character, combining the feel of a Surrey market town with the diversity and vibrancy of central London.
They also highlighted opportunities to improve public spaces, accessibility, and play facilities; strengthen connections between the town centre and the river; and create more opportunities to enjoy Richmond’s cultural offer. The town centre programme aims to build on what already makes Richmond special while responding to these priorities.
There is already work under way. In June, we approved four priority projects to start turning our vision into action: improvements to Whittaker Square and Avenue, a new approach to movement throughout the centre, including seating, work to explore options for George Street, and a new play space at Little Green. Further engagement and consultation will take place as individual proposals are developed, before decisions are made.
The programme forms part of the wider Richmond Growth Plan, helping to strengthen the town centre as a place to shop, do business, enjoy culture and spend time, while protecting the distinctive character that makes Richmond so special.
