Kingston Council and Countryside Partnerships, part of Vistry Group, have secured planning permission for Phase 2 of the Cambridge Road Estate regeneration, moving the long-running project forward with more council homes, greener spaces and improved places for the community to meet and play.
The next phase will deliver 383 new homes, including 94 council rent homes, alongside a new neighbourhood green, around 100 new trees and more than 2,000 square metres of dedicated play space. The wider regeneration programme will eventually provide 2,170 new homes, community facilities and upgraded public areas, building on Phase 1, where approximately 135 households have already moved into new council homes.
Designed by BPTW, the scheme aims to connect the new homes with existing streets and create accessible routes through the neighbourhood. It also includes more than 700 cycle spaces, around 120 parking spaces, and a central green with seating and play areas designed to support everyday community life.
Sustainability is a major focus. Planned air source heat pumps and solar panels are intended to reduce carbon emissions, while careful design choices around insulation, window size and building orientation aim to improve comfort and energy efficiency. Homes with windows on more than one side should also benefit from better natural light and ventilation.
Councillor Emily Davey said: “Securing planning permission for Phase 2 brings us closer to delivering even more quality new homes and a renewed neighbourhood at Cambridge Road Estate.” She added that the council has “a responsibility to our residents to keep moving forward and deliver on our commitments.”
Nick Churcher said the approval marks “another significant step forward in the transformation of the Cambridge Road Estate,” and highlighted the partnership’s role in creating “a vibrant new neighbourhood” with affordable housing, public spaces and community facilities.
The council says it will continue working with residents and keep them updated as the regeneration progresses.
