Wandsworth approves plans for 50 per cent affordable housing as councillors agree to amend the Local Plan.

These changes would require developers to deliver 50 per cent affordable housing on all new schemes, with a majority to be council housing.

Our Local Plan formalises how we work with developers to create and deliver affordable housing in Wandsworth and is being updated to make clear affordable housing is a top priority. This adds to the existing guidance that the council provides to developers working in the borough.

We will now host formal public consultation in early 2025 before submitting the proposals to the Government for examination.

Simon Hogg, leader of Wandsworth Council, said:

“Delivering a fairer, more compassionate borough means addressing inequality in the housing sector.

“As a council, we are doing our part building new council homes for local families in our Homes for Wandsworth Programme, but we cannot do it alone and developers must also deliver new social rented homes when they build new housing in Wandsworth.

“More social homes owned and managed by the council will help to get families off council housing waiting lists and into secure homes.”
