Savills has secured unanimous resolution to grant outline planning permission for the redevelopment of The Galleries shopping centre, Bristol.
The redevelopment of the 4.8-acre site will see the demolition of the shopping centre and its 1,000-space multi-storey car park.
Plans show it to be replaced with a mixed- use residential scheme designed by AHMM Architects, set to create up to 450 new homes, including 20 per cent affordable, and up to 750 student beds, along with workspace, community space, retail, hotel and leisure.
There will also be an energy centre, a public hub, and 1.5 acres of green public realm.
The proposals set out the development of five new urban blocks with building heights of up to 22 storeys, two listed buildings situated within the site will be retained for retail and community uses.
The positive resolution by Bristol City Council follows over three years of extensive pre-application engagement by the Savills team with Bristol City Council and other stakeholders, including the Bristol City Council Regeneration Team and Historic England.

Having been involved in the project since 2019, it is a great achievement to reach this stage in the process after a long period of collaboration with the Council.’
Craig O’Brien, head of Savills South West planning team, said: ‘To have secured unanimous support from the committee for this fantastic regeneration scheme marks an important step in the progression of Bristol City Council’s aspirations for the area, as set out in its City Centre Development Delivery Plan.’
The application was supported by Savills Economics, Environmental Planning and Infrastructure, EIA and Development teams. The permission was secured on behalf of Deeley Freed and LaSalle Investment Management.
