M&S has applied to redevelop the site of a former Toys R Us store in Ipswich for a new department store.
The retailer has applied to Barbergh District Council to strip back the long-vacant toy shop on a 2.31-hectare site at Copdock Interchange and create a flagship 83,000 sq ft store, selling its food, clothing and homewares on both ground level and a new mezzanine floor.
It will bring a total of 124 new full and part time jobs, bringing the retailers total jobs count in Ipswich to 207.
Reconfiguration of car park will mean provision of EV charging spaces and cycle parking and amendments to landscaping and associated works.
The 2.31-hectare site has been vacant since Toys R Us went into administration in 2018.
A planning statement produced by Montagu Evans states: “The proposed store will provide M&S’s range of comparison products, including its popular clothing and homeware ranges — providing stylish, affordable fashion, everyday basics, and household products.
“The store will also offer the own range of M&S Food products, selling high-quality fresh produce, prepared meals, bakery goods, household staples and seasonal favourites – all underpinned by M&S’s commitment to trusted sourcing and sustainability.”
A town centre M&S store will continue to operate despite the new development.
