Waverley Borough Council is delighted to hear that UK Oil & Gas PLC (UKOG) will be surrendering its licence to extract oil and gas at the Dunsfold site.

This decision marks a significant victory for the local community, environmental campaigners, and the council, who have long opposed the exploration and extraction activities in this sensitive area.

The Dunsfold site, located adjacent to the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), is home to numerous protected species and is a cherished part of the local landscape. Waverley Borough Council has consistently argued that drilling at this site would have disastrous consequences for the community, local wildlife, and the wider environment.

Councillor Steve Williams, Waverley Borough Council portfolio holder for environment and sustainability, expressed his satisfaction with the outcome: “This is a momentous day for our community and our environment. The decision by UKOG to surrender their licence is a testament to the tireless efforts of residents and campaigners who have stood firm in their opposition to this project. It is a clear message that the protection of our natural heritage and the well-being of our residents must come first.”

Councillor Paul Follows, leader of Waverley Borough Council, added: “The onshore extraction of fossil fuels is incompatible with the Climate Emergency declared by our council, Surrey County Council, and the national government. We must focus on sustainable and renewable energy sources to address the urgent challenges of climate change. This decision is a step in the right direction and reinforces our commitment to protecting our environment for future generations.”

Waverley Borough Council remains committed to advocating for sustainable development. It will continue to work with local communities to ensure that the natural beauty and biodiversity of the area are preserved.
