Harrods is planning a food production warehouse in Thatcham.
The upmarket retailer has a distribution centre in the Mill Lane area of the town and has submitted a screening request to West Berkshire Council over the need to an environmental impact assessment for its plan to build a unit for food production on 1.24-hectares of neighbouring land (visible to the right of the building in the Google image below, bordering Colthrop Lane).
The site, to the east of the distribution centre and surrounded by industrial buildings is currently in use as a vehicle maintenance depot for Harrods.
The screening request, produced by Quod reveals plans for a 7, 200 sq m scheme under use classes B2 and B8 (general industrial / storage and distribution). Around 81 parking spaces are proposed.
It would operate 24 hours a day, all year round. The development is expected to support an additional 110 full time equivalent (FTE) jobs. Construction is expected to take around two years and, subject to planning permission, could start in early 2026 with completion in Q1, 2028.
Architect on the project is AshtonSmith.
