The Mercure Brigstow Hotel has received planning permission to increase the number of rooms from 116 to 174.
The Bristol City Council planning committee approved the application from Supreme Hotels, part of the Splendid Hospitality Group, at its August 28 meeting.
The hotel was acquired by its current owners in 2016 for around £16 million. More recently it was used as asylum seeker accommodation, prompting demonstrations last month.
The reconfiguration of 5 – 7 Welsh Back also includes changes to an existing ground floor food and beverage unit, which has a street frontage, and the creation of a lightwell within the existing structure.
There are no changes to the footprint of the building, ensuring it maintains its character within the City and Queen Square Conservation Area.
Planning consultant Berrys and architects Maith Design acted on behalf of the applicant.
