The government has directed Bath and North East Somerset Council (B&NES Council) not to approve Bath Rugby’s stadium redevelopment plans without “specific authorisation” from the Secretary of State.
The letter sent from the then Secretary of State Angela Rayner on 26 August “directs the Council not to grant permission on this application without specific authorisation.”
The letter further states that this “does not prevent the Council from considering the application, forming a view as to the merits or, if they are so minded, refusing permission.”
The revised planning application was submitted in late 2024 and will be considered by the B&NES Council planning committee on 17 September.
Despite the government intervention, the letter stressed this does not demonstrate “any indication of the Secretary of State’s attitude towards the application scheme”.
The top-flight club is looking to expand and redevelop its home, The Recreation Ground, into an 18,000-seat venue (pictured).
The current ground has a 14,500-seat capacity, with the club spending in the region of £1 million each season for its temporary stands which have to be taken down in the summer.
Tarquin McDonald, chief executive of Bath Rugby, said: “This submission is another important milestone for the club and the city.
“[…] The amended submission showcases an exciting vision for the future, with significant public benefits that will positively contribute to the entire community.”
