Wandsworth Council and Battersea Power Station are collaborating to build 200 new high-quality council homes as part of a 42-acre development plan.

This initiative is a key component of the council’s Homes for Wandsworth programme, aiming to provide well-designed homes for local families at social rent levels. The homes will be constructed on an undeveloped plot within Phase 5 of the Battersea Power Station masterplan, located east of the Grade II* listed building. This development is a significant step towards addressing the housing crisis and fostering mixed, balanced communities in the borough.

The broader Battersea Power Station project is entering a new phase, focusing on evolving the riverside neighbourhood over the next decade. Plans include additional cultural attractions, new homes, and workplaces, emphasising creativity, community, and innovation.

Housing Secretary Steve Reed stated, “We promised a social housing revolution, and Wandsworth is stepping up to the challenge. It’s fantastic to see that high-quality, genuinely affordable homes will be delivered for local people, and at a historic London landmark. Our £39 billion record investment in social housing will back more ambitious councils to deliver thousands more homes families need.”

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, expressed pride in supporting the project through City Hall grant funding, highlighting the importance of partnership in accelerating the delivery of sustainable council homes across London. Simon Hogg, Leader of Wandsworth Council, emphasised the mission to make Wandsworth a fairer borough by providing affordable homes at social rent for those in need.

The development is part of Wandsworth’s Growth Plan, which includes the new Growth Corridor linking Battersea, Nine Elms, Clapham Junction, and Wandsworth Town, aligning with the Mayor of London’s strategic growth objectives for housing, infrastructure, and economic development
