Plans for a new Aldi at Winnersh go before councillors on Wednesday (December 13) with a recommendation for approval.

Aldi wants to build a supermarket on vacant land at Gazelle Close off the main Wokingham Road, which already has Wickes, Halfords and Pets at Home.

The proposed 10,124 sq m store, which will have 124 parking spaces, is on a one-hectare site next to Winnersh Fields Business Park, an area known to flood.

However, in a report to Wednesday’s meeting of Wokingham Borough Council’s planning committee, officers noted the site already has permission for a vehicle repair and sales development.

The report says the building would be away from neighbouring homes and offer economic benefits and contribute positively to the vitality and vibrancy of the area.

It concludes: “On balance the benefits of the scheme outweigh the negative impacts and the proposal complies with the development plan when taken as a whole.”

According to Aldi’s submission, the proposal, planned by Bristol-based Planning Potential, will create between 30 and 50 jobs.
