Councillors have unanimously approved plans for 60 homes at the site of the former Carters outdoor shop in Caversham Road, Reading – but with reservations over access.
Members at Reading Borough Council’s planning applications committee’s February 1 meeting offered praise for the Bellway Homes scheme, which extends across vacant buildings and an MOT centre, particularly for its 30 per cent affordable housing allocation.
But a number expressed concern over vehicles turning right out of the site access road, which is in the same position as the existing access, close to the Vastern Road roundabout.
Cllr Tony Page requested that a review of the junction is considered at a later date and officers agreed to include the request as part of a traffic regulation order within the permission.
Cllr Page added: “I think the developer, who is represented this evening, should be aware of the concerns many of us have about the issue.
“There will be work on a traffic regulation order and that would be the appropriate time to consider whether there should be a ‘left in, left out’ arrangement and any associated restrictions.
“Overall, I welcome the application, I think it makes good use of the site.”
The scheme will have three blocks of flats and two terraces of houses. A total 30 parking spaces will be provided and a car club will be subsidised by Bellway for five years.
