The long-awaited Cambridge South East Transport project took a leap forward when councillors agreed to submit a Transport and Works Act Order for phase two of the scheme.

Cambridgeshire County Council’s full council agreed to go ahead with the submission at its October 22 meeting.

The proposed busway, travel hub and walking and cycling route will connect areas along the route to Cambridge and the new Cambridge South Station from the south east of the city.

It will also offer a route to the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, Granta Park and Babraham Research Campus. The new travel hub near the A11 and A1307 would serve people coming to Cambridge from the east and south.

The scheme was awarded £7.2 million by the former Conservative Government to ensure the biomedical campus has the sufficient public transport links.

Cllr Elisa Meschini, chair of the Greater Cambridge Partnership’s executive board, said: “It’s great that this well-overdue project is progressing. The Cambridge South East Transport project will be vital for the delivery and success of the new children’s and cancer hospitals.

“Sustainable transport solutions are needed to enable access to the crucial, life-saving work being carried out in our great city and giving people greater travel choices to enable them to get to work, school or to meet friends.”

The application is expected to be submitted to the Department for Transport this Winter and is likely to bring about a public inquiry.
