A rural affordable housing scheme in Birdham is receiving a £500,000 grant from Chichester District Council.

Approved on March 3, the project will create 15 homes on Crooked Lane, including two and three-bedroom houses and bungalows, all for social rent.

These homes will prioritise individuals with local connections to Birdham. The development, managed by Hyde Housing, is funded by £459,000 from the council’s Rural Housing Fund and £41,000 from developer contributions.

Councillor Oona Hickson emphasised the council’s commitment to providing decent homes, in line with its housing strategy. The grant aims to address the growing need for affordable housing, with priority given to those on the council’s housing register and those connected to Birdham Parish, such as local employees or those with family ties to residents.
