Public consultation has begun on a draft masterplan for the future of the Rowley Drive area of Newmarket.

West Suffolk Council (WSC) has given Flagship Housing permission to consult locals on plans for its vision for regeneration of the area, which could mean replacement of existing tower blocks with up to 400 new homes.

Under the masterplan, older blocks would be replaced with energy-efficient homes designed to complement Newmarket’s character. That could include some undercroft parking to make cars less dominant, enhanced play areas, safer walking routes, a community hub and better access to nature.

Flagship says the designs will honour the town’s racing heritage, with potential improvements to the Rowley Drive horsewalk. All homes would meet high energy standards.

An outline planning application is expected to be submitted next year.

Dave Armstrong, chief operating officer at Flagship Housing parent company Bromford Flagship, said: “We are pleased to have been granted permission to consult with the public on the Rowley Drive Masterplan.

“We now look forward to talking to residents and the wider public about these exciting possibilities, listening to their views and working together to shape what comes next.”

The consultation runs until November 3, and there will special sessions for residents of the Rowley Drive area on October 7 – 9. There will be an online session for the wider public on October 14 from 11am – midday.

Further in-person exhibitions will take place at Newmarket’s Memorial Hall. These will take place on October 21 from 5pm-7pm and on October 25 from 10am-midday.
