A tender process has begun for the £25 million contract to build Andover’s new theatre.
Test Valley Borough Council has launched a two-stage process to appoint a contractor to construct its new venue, The Lights, at the site of the former Poundstretcher store at the entrance to the Chantry shopping centre.
Demolition contractor Erith is currently clearing the vacant site.
The construction contract comprises a 77-week main works contract valued at £24.4m and a 22-week professional services contract valued at £600,000. The project is supported by £18.3m of Government funding.
The Burrell Foley Fischer-designed theatre will feature a 400-seat multi-level auditorium alongside a flexible performance and event space, dance studios and meeting rooms for public hire. There will be café and bar areas at either end of the building and outdoor terraces.
Cllr Phil North, leader of Test Valley Borough Council, said: “This is an exciting time for Andover. Clearing the site and launching the tender process moves us closer to delivering the new theatre. This venue will be a place to celebrate creativity and community, as well as a catalyst for economic growth. It’s a key part of our wider regeneration plans and will help bring more people into the town centre, day and night.”
Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with opening in 2028. It will replace the current theatre, also called The Lights, in West Street.
