AEW UK has painted a derelict pub in Reading even though it has no plans for what to do with it.

The former Rising Sun in Forbury Road closed in 2015 and owner AEW had planned to demolish it in 2017.

However, little has happened to the site in almost a decade and last year, Reading Borough Council issued AEW with a notice under s215 of the Town and Country Planning Act.

It allows councils to request a property owner improves a site if its condition adversely affects the amenity of the area (see Google image below).

The council has told Thames Tap the recent repainting is AEW’s response to its request.

A spokesperson for AEW would not comment other than to say: “AEW is continuing to explore options, but is not in a position to provide details at this time.”

AEW has applied to convert the North Gate House office building behind the pub to 78 flats under Permitted Development Rights but the council says that application is unconnected to the work on the pub.
