Plans to build more than 400 flats at The Oracle in Reading have been deferred for a site visit.

Reading Borough Council’s planning applications committee approved a motion by Cllr Matt Yeo to defer a decision on the plans to demolish most of the former Debenhams store and the Vue Cinema to develop on both sides of the River Kennet at its December 3 meeting. It had been recommended for approval.

Cllr Andrew Hornsby-Smith told the meeting: “This is the most important application we’ve seen at this committee and it will really impact the town centre. We need to make sure we’ve got it right.”

The visit, which will require developer representation, has been provisionally arranged for December 18 so that the decision can be made at the January 7 meeting. However, officers warned the timing may have to be rearranged if people were too busy in the run up to Christmas.
