UKPF consultant Hugh Blaza describes a likely new AI future for one of Oxfordshire’s technology hotspots.
An invitation has been issued to AI data centre operators to partner with Culham Campus, home to the UK Atomic Energy Authority.
Culham wants AI tech companies to put themselves forward with a view to supporting its activities on its site near Abingdon in Oxfordshire.
This follows hard on the heels of Culham’s invitation for a long – term partner to assist in its development of buildings and infrastructure, as reported here.
AI is, as we all know, a major component in the Government’s quest for growth and Culham Campus was identified in its AI Opportunities Action Plan as the first AI Growth Zone.
It’s entirely logical that the new dynamic technology should be developed alongside the 21st Century solution to our energy needs: fusion. It is widely known that the scientists at Culham have been developing fusion technology for years and they are now gearing up to make the quantum leap from lab to National Grid.
Will AI boost this activity? From the invitation issued by Culham, AI is clearly seen to be an essential component. And, where so many development sites in Oxfordshire and beyond are being stymied on account of lack of infrastructure, the power supply at Culham is already there; the Campus has already allocated enough of its abundant capacity to its pioneering projects.
Culham has land too and expects to dedicate around 10 acres of its secure and mature site to the AI project.
The benefits in terms of construction jobs and thereafter employment opportunities for those working in an industry dedicated to the generation of a source of clean, sustainable energy are looking tangible. Oxfordshire is fortunate to have the skills and facilities to offer them.
Details of the invitation to partner with Culham can be found here:
