The first consultation has begun over a proposed land deal to allow Maidenhead United to build a new stadium at Braywick Park.

The Royal Borough’s cabinet considered the club’s plans in January and is now consulting on a proposal to lease the club a 6.13-acre section of the park, close to Forest Bridge School, on a 999-year lease.

A public open spaces notification has been published and members of the public can visit displays in person or online.

The Royal Borough had reached agreement with the Magpies in April 2022 for 9.14 acres of Braywick Park (the athletics track) to be leased to the club for a 5,000 capacity stadium.

That deal was scrapped when the Royal Borough’s scrutiny committee looked over the terms – including the £460,000 total rent.

Revival

But last December hopes emerged for a stadium on the smaller site, which is tucked between the school and Braywick Recycling Centre.

Commitments from the club include:

  • Expanding Braywick Nature Reserve as part of a wider package of environmental and biodiversity improvements for the area.
  • Upgrades to existing community facilities, including refurbishing the athletics track (the previously proposed site for the stadium).
  • Improving access and parking at Braywick.

Three maps have been made available online, including the above, and objections must be submitted to the council by post or at property@rbwm.gov.uk by 5pm on April 10.

Comment

Cabinet member for adult services, planning & governance, Cllr Adam Bermange, said: “We know there’s a lot of interest in what a relocation of the football ground could mean for the community, so this notice is really about keeping people informed from the very start.

“It gives everyone the chance to look at the details of the latest proposals, which are quite a transformation on the earlier plans, and go a long way towards addressing our core criticisms of that original proposal.

“There’s still a process to follow, and community feedback will continue to be an important part of that, which is why there will be future opportunities for communities to continue to feed into things as they develop.”
