Freight House is to be added to the list of the official list of Assets of Community Value register at Rochford District Council.

It follows a nomination by the Rochford Residents Steering Group on July 10 which campaigned for the former British Rail goods shed, turned conference and performance space, to be included.

Following a review, council officers decided Freight House meets the necessary statutory criteria and should be formally listed.

There is now a five-year period in which, if the council or owner wishes to dispose of it, a moratorium period of six months from the date of notification begins, during which eligible community groups can formulate bids to acquire it before it can go on open sale.

Cllr Mike Webb, Rochford District Council’s chair of the communities, wellbeing and housing committee, said: “The Freight House has long been a focal point for our community, and its listing as an Asset of Community Value reflects just how much it means to local people.

“Through this listing, this much-loved community venue is acknowledged for its role as part of Rochford’s heritage and future community use.”
