A Reading pub which closed when lockdown began is set to make way for a Greggs drive-thru.

The George & Dragon on the A4 Bath Road, which dates from the late 19th Century, closed in March 2020 and never reopened. Owner Greene King won consent to demolish the building for a drive-thru and restaurant in December and has now applied to put signs on its planned new scheme.

The planning application to redevelop says the pub has had numerous modern extensions and is of limited historic value.

Once redeveloped, the 0.25-hectare site will have a restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating and provide takeaway food and the drive thru. It will have a 33- space car park to the west of the site which will include 10 EV charging spaces plus parking for 10 bikes.

The drive-thru is expected to support around 11 jobs.
