Infrastructure and property developer IJM has plans approved for the redevelopment of The Wheat Quarter, Hyde Way, Welwyn Garden City, following two years of stakeholder discussions.

The proposal for the site includes 6.5 acres of public spaces as well as 578 new homes, comprising 133 homes with private gardens, 141 homes for retirement living, and 204 flats for rent. Additionally, the site will have a 180-room Apart-Hotel.

Steve Crutchley, UK development director at IJM, said: “We are delighted that Welwyn & Hatfield planning committee has approved our proposals for the Wheat Quarter site. We have already procured a contractor and will immediately start construction works to transform this site into the gateway that Welwyn Garden City deserves.”

The redevelopment will also involve the repurposing of the silos into a restaurant and a bouldering and climbing space, alongside improvements to the pedestrian footbridge which accesses the train station. Other ancillary buildings will be re-used for Padel Tennis, retail and other sports and leisure uses.

The Boiler House and Grain Store will be transformed into further food and beverage areas.
