Councillors have been recommended to approve a plan by The Oracle in Reading to turn its House of Fraser store into a mix of leisure, food and retail uses.

Reading Borough Council’s planning applications committee will consider the application at its March 4 meeting.

The Oracle plans to reconfigure the 12,000 sq m unit, once one of two anchor stores at the centre, into:

  • Food hall with bar, a D2 leisure use (likely to be adventure golf) and a separate retail or café area on the riverside level
  • D2 leisure (likely to be a bowling alley) and a retail unit on the lower ground level
  • A new retail unit and a storage area created on the upper ground level

Further alterations include removal of the lifts and escalators to the Holybrook car park which would add a small number of extra spaces and there will be two new electrical car charging points.
