Wandsworth Council Planning Committee has unanimously approved the creation of a Padel Tennis Centre on the roof of Southside Shopping Centre, Wandsworth.

The agreed proposal is for alterations to the car park, including the development of the upper level of Southside 2 Car Park, to provide a Padel tennis centre, including six Padel tennis courts with associated spectator seating, changing and treatment rooms, showers, a reception and shop with associated office space, a bar and bar/diner with associated indoor and outdoor seating.

The proposal has received significant support from residents and the LTA.

Padel, the fastest-growing racket sport in Europe, has taken the continent by storm. Originating in Acapulco, Mexico, in the late 1960s, this captivating game skillfully blends elements of tennis and squash.

Enrique Corcuera, a tennis enthusiast, faced space constraints when building a traditional tennis court. His innovative solution was a smaller court surrounded by walls, ensuring the game could thrive even in limited areas. His Spanish friend, Alfonso of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, introduced the first padel courts to Spain in 1974. Since then, Spain has embraced padel, sparking exponential growth in other European countries.

The architects are Zap Architecture, and the developer is Southside Ltd Partnership.
