A £5.1 million package of improvements to Bicester Market Square has been approved by councillors.
Cherwell District Council’s executive committee voted unanimously to go ahead with the preferred concept designs at its September 2 meeting.
Final designs will now be drawn up before a planning application is submitted.
Cllr Lesley McLean, deputy leader of Cherwell District Council and portfolio holder for finance, property and regeneration, said: “The Market Square sits in the heart of Bicester and this exciting project will enable residents, businesses and visitors alike to enjoy a revitalised and active town centre.
“The approval of the concept design and additional £881,000 s106 funding from Oxfordshire County Council highlights our commitment to investing in our town centres and supporting the regeneration, growth and innovation of local businesses and communities.
“The £5.131m total investment for this project will help to transform the Market Square into a vibrant hub for residents to meet that not only reflects the needs and aspirations of the community but will also inspire further opportunities for business growth and a better-connected town.
“This regeneration is part of a holistic strategy for the entire town centre area, with the Area Oversight Group continuing to lead on wider improvements. We’re incredibly grateful to the Bicester community for their time, feedback and enthusiasm, which have been instrumental in shaping the vision for Market Square.”
Work on technical studies and detailed design work will take place during Autumn and the council hopes, planning permission allowing, to start work in Summer 2026.
