Plans for the £600 million Puy du Fou theme park in Oxfordshire have been submitted to Cherwell District Council.

Puy du Fou which has history-themed destinations in France and Spain, plans its first UK park on a site near J10 of the M40 on 153 hectares of farmland north of Bucknell, near Bicester.

The scheme was first announced last year and consultation started in January.

If councillors approve the scheme the park will open in phases beginning in 2029. Puy du Fou says it will deliver an annual £500m boost to the local and regional economy.

It will open between April and October each year and have four period villages and 13 live shows, eventually attracting an estimated 1.47 million visitors a year.

There will also be three hotels, each themed to different periods in British history, and a conference centre, which will be available all year round.

Up to 8,000 jobs are expected to be created from the development.

Puy du Fou chief executive Olivier Strebelle said: “We have only submitted these plans after an extensive consultation, which took over a year and included six in-person events and over 250 individual meetings, all of which have helped to shape our final proposals.

“We did not rush our consultation because we wanted to get our proposals right. We have wanted to come to the UK for many years.

“Britain has such a rich, colourful and exciting history, and the site we have chosen near Bicester is the ideal location to create a world-class destination that will bring that history to life.

“This will be a £600m investment in the local economy over the next ten years and will create thousands of jobs, but it will also have the environment and sustainability at its heart.”
