Families in South Kilburn are set for a huge win as Brent Council unveils a major heating overhaul that promises to send energy bills tumbling.
Carbon emissions will also be cut by around 980 tonnes every year, delivering a total saving of more than 39,000 tonnes over the project’s 40-year lifespan.
This brand-new District Heat Network is set to save South Kilburn households hundreds of pounds a year. A district heat network is a system that pipes hot water from a central energy source to multiple buildings for heating and hot water.
The £36 million scheme, which was given the green light, will pump low-carbon, efficiently generated heat to homes across South Kilburn, replacing old, money-draining systems with a modern network designed to protect residents from the volatility of the energy market. The South Kilburn District Heat Network is part of Brent’s wider push to tackle the climate emergency while making sure green upgrades benefit residents.
The council has emphasised that the network is structured to keep tariffs fair, transparent and affordable, ensuring residents feel the benefit directly in their pockets.
Cllr Jake Rubin, cabinet member for climate action and community power, said: “This project is about fairness, security and dignity. Too many residents in South Kilburn have struggled with rising energy bills, and the District Heat Network is a major step towards changing that. By investing in modern, efficient infrastructure, we’re not only cutting carbon emissions and improving air quality — we are helping families keep more money in their pockets. This is one of our key priorities – delivering climate action that helps residents with the cost of living.”
Construction is expected to begin in late 2026, with the main build phase running through to 2028. The first homes are anticipated to connect to the network in 2028, with full rollout continuing into 2029.
The South Kilburn District Heat Network forms part of Brent’s wider commitment to tackling the climate emergency while ensuring that the transition to cleaner energy delivers real, tangible benefits for local people, as seen in Brent’s investments in the Church End and Kingsbury Green Neighbourhood pilots.
As the network expands, more households will be able to access affordable heat, helping build a fairer, more resilient future for the community.
