At Hanover Court and Princess Court in Cambridge, approval has been granted for demolition of existing buildings, and construction of 165 new homes – 72 of which will be council homes.
The approval was brought forward by the Cambridge Investment Partnership (CIP) at last weeks Cambridge City Council Planning Committee meeting, where the application came into the meeting with a recommendation of approval subject to conditions and completion of a Section 106 Agreement.
The site was previously identified for the redevelopment scheme due to the poor condition of the 127 existing properties, which are now mostly vacant due to safety concerns.
Whilst the site wasn’t allocated within Cambridge’s Local Plan, the previous use of the site as a residential development remained the same and was therefore considered acceptable.
There were concerns regarding the development causing the loss of three Category A London plane trees, however this was considered to be outweighed by the public benefits the development would provide.
Of the 26 representations received, 10 were neutral, and 16 were objections. The objections concerned the scale of the development, the loss of affordable homes (72 of the proposed developments homes will be affordable, whereas the previous development accommodated 82), and sustainability, amongst other issues.
Decision
The application was approved as per the officer’s recommendation, with amendments from the committee discussion.
