Plans to add up to 422 flats to Reading’s Broad Street Mall go before councillors on March 4 with a recommendation for approval.

The application, by planning consultancy DP9 for asset manager Moorgarth on behalf of owner Inception Reading Sarl, is for four towers of 42, 98, 134 and 148 flats, ranging in height from five to 22 storeys.

The application includes the reconfiguration of retail space to form four new units totalling 1,500 sq m on the ground floor. In the multi-storey car park there will be a loss of more than 100 spaces.

The flats, all Built to Rent, will be made up of 201 with one bedroom, 219 with two and 12 with three.

Reading Borough Council’s planning applications committee has been recommended to approve the scheme –  or to refuse it if a s106 agreement which includes a stipulation for 42 affordable units on the site, is not signed by March 23.

Tim Vaughan, chief executive of  of Moorgarth Group, said: “Our proposal for a new residential development at Broad Street Mall is the next exciting phase in the continuing evolution of the scheme. Residential is an essential part of a truly mixed use scheme, where retail, offices, hotel, cinema, healthcare, foodhall and other leisure uses all inter-relate to create a vibrant mixed-use quarter and we hope this will be the catalyst for the Minster Quarter regeneration.”
