Plans for a new hotel in the car park of the Crowne Plaza in Reading have been recommended for refusal.

The plans by RBH Hospitality Management, owner of the Crowne Plaza, for a five-story 132-room hotel, go before Reading Brough Council’s planning applications committee on Wednesday, December 11.

The Crowne Plaza, next to Caversham Bridge, uses a secure car park in Thames Side Promenade. The development will reduce the number of parking spaces in it from 200 to 118 for the two hotels.

A total of 50 objections were received and officers have given seven reasons for refusal which include traffic, parking, quality of the development, insufficient information about ground gas at the former landfill site, inadequate environmental standards and absence of a satisfactory s106 agreement.

Caversham and District Residents’ Association has objected over the building’s height and dominance, effect on the Thames Promenade and nearby conservation area, traffic, parking and pollution.
