The Manor Road, West Ealing proposal for 144 affordable homes was rejected at the planning committee of the 28th October 2020, following the “stop the towers” campaign supported by many local politicians across all parties. Over 2,600 objections were received mostly about the height and design of the building.
The proposal by Southern Grove development and the Thames Valley Housing association was for 144 homes, ground floor commercial space and a roof garden next to the West Ealing Crossrail station. According to Southern Grove this would be the “UK’S tallest fully affordable tower,”
Southern Grove is a specialist mixed-use developer with a particular focus on the residential and hospitality sectors. They create communities around London and the South East, in particular neighbourhoods connected by the Elizabeth Line (Crossrail).
The proposal had already been reduced from 26 storeys to 18 (and 12) with the recommendation to approve by the Ealing Planning Department subject to a stage II referral to the Mayor. Now that the scheme has been rejected will the London Mayor step in and approve? There is pressure on the Mayor to deliver much-needed housing in the capital and his office recently overturned the Manor Road, Homebase development refusal by the London Borough of Richmond despite more than 1,000 objections.
