The new lease of life for Reading’s Jackson’s Corner was unveiled when dignitaries joined developers for a launch at the iconic site.
The event on Thursday, July 8 was hosted by Nori Touati, founder of Ankor Property group, the site’s current owner. Mayor of Reading Cllr David Stevens cut the ribbon to mark the launch of three ground floor commercial units and 33 apartments above.
The store, which closed on Christmas Eve 2013 after 138 years, was known for its service, charm and tradition and company archivist Thomas Macey turned up in traditional costume to celebrate the new life for the famous building.
Mr Touati said: “I am proud to be reopening the doors of this historic building and welcoming it back into Reading’s community, both with new residents and independent shopkeepers.
“I am keen for its new tenants to have an appreciation of its great history as they become custodians of this delightful building.”
Carly Tagg from Savills is marketing the development’s 33 apartments. She said: ‘Town centre living is always popular but we have seen an increase in demand since lockdown as people realise what they have been missing.
“Jackson’s Corner occupies a fantastic location within a stone’s throw of all that Reading has to offer.
“Much as buyers are looking to live in the thick of things, increasingly they want quiet spaces to relax in. Jacksons Corner incorporates a courtyard garden for residents, which is a rarity in the town centre.”
Items from Reading Museum, including a scale model of the shop from more than 100 years ago, were on display at the event. Those are back on show at the museum until July 30.
Guide prices at Jacksons Corner start at £255,000 for a one bedroom apartment and Help to Buy is offered on selected properties.
