Developers with ideas about how Wokingham Borough Council (WBC) can meet its zero carbon obligations are being invited to submit their thoughts.
The council, which declared a climate emergency in July 2019, has launched a market engagement to ask potential development partners how to help create its first net zero or low carbon housing schemes.
It has two outline planning applications of its own within the borough which have already been submitted – for 87 homes at Winnersh Farm and 130 at Toutley East.
The appointed developer will need to secure reserve matters planning consent for both.
WBC is looking for the most feasible option for reduction of carbon operational performance and the developments must be gas free and have high water efficiency standards. The council also wants a biodiversity net gain of at least 10 per cent on both sites.
Potential contractors will have to explain their proposals for embodied carbon reduction and reducing carbon emissions associated with the construction and the costs involved.
The market engagement document states: “We would like to hear supplier views on what the council should consider with regard to developing these sites in the best possible way.
“Depending on the number of interested suppliers, we will either host a number of supplier events with interested developers, or we will set up meetings with interested parties on a one-to-one basis, in the weeks following the closing date.”
The closing date is October 24.
